Kimi ni Todoke

Kuronuma Sawako is completely misunderstood by her classmates. Her timid and sweet demeanor is often mistaken for malicious behavior. This is due to her resemblance to the ghost girl from “The Ring”, which has led her peers to give her the nickname Sadako. Longing to make friends and live a normal life, she is naturally drawn to Kazehaya Shouta, the most popular guy in class, whose “100% refreshing” personality earns him great admiration from Sawako. So when Kazehaya starts talking to her, maybe there is hope for the friendships Sawako has always longed for. Maybe…there is even a little hope for some romance in her future.

Avelys Rating: 8/10

Avelys Notes: I picked up this manga searching for a really good romance. I heard so many great things about it and I gave it a try. The story started off with a beautiful girl that had a hard time making friends, which was an interesting introduction. Most shoujo present their MC with some sort of flaw, and this flaw was so well developed that you can’t help but root for her. You see as she tries to make friends, falls in love and tries to connect with others. Her journey is inspiring. My only problems with this story is how slow paced it is. Most shoujo have a slow romantic development so it’s not that hard to grasp, but this one is even more slow than the standard pace. It’s not as big of an issue since I was able to read fairly fast–but after 100 chapters and the most they’ve done is share one kiss… I know this is Japan and some people hate PDA but c’mon. Other than the pacing, I do love the story. I like the attention it gives to the side characters. They each present their own story and you see them deal with their issues. I think my favorite part of this manga was when the male lead was being spoon fed lies about our MC and instead of avoiding her and making a whole dramatic arc…he went up to her and asked her himself. This cleared up every misunderstanding and it blew me away. Not only did it skip the unnecessary melodrama but it gave a very realistic reaction to this issue.  I recommend this to anyone that wants a slow romance.

This manga is still ongoing. Read 95/??? chapters.
