Middle school 2nd year, Amano Yukiteru, is a boy who has problem making friends. He thinks of himself as a bystander and will always write down everything he sees in a cell phone diary.
Tormented by solitude, Yukiteru began to imagine things like a friend called Deus Ex Machina who is apparently the Lord of Time & Space. Seeing Yukiteru’s miserable state, Deus gives him a new ability. His diary will now record events that will happen in the near future. Yukiteru is then forced to participate in a game whose winner will become Deus’ successor.
Review – Candy
Okay, I’m starting off with this major warning, MY SCORE IS TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE AND BIAS DUE TO MY LOVE FOR YUNO! All in all, this show is at best, alright, but Yuno is my life and I will give her all the fucking love! It this turns into just a fangasming for Yuno, you’ve been warned. Now for the actual review.
I remember watching this show and being so hyped for each episode to air. Now that I look back on it, I’m really questioning why on earth why I was so hyped. Well not really questioning, I know why I was hyped (my love for Yuno was serious), but point is, besides her, there’s nothing outstanding or special at all about this show. Honestly it’s a typical edgy title full of blood and murder and “deep” choices and thoughts. It’s actually completely a surface show and you do not need to go deeper then what you’re presented with.
What we are presented with is basically a murder game. Our main character, the most annoying main I had dealt with at that time (I’ve seen worst believe it or not), Yukitera, was basically being a little bitch and got himself placed in a death game. Kill or be killed is pretty much the summary of the game. Seriously, he would’ve died in his first encounter if Yuno was such a god tier bamf! Like I’m perfectly okay with the gender role switch that happens in this show, but Yuki is such a little bitch, it’s just annoying. I sat there, strongly believing he would man up eventually! He does, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay later on. Anyway, ignoring my tangent, basically you have 12 players in this game right, and you have no actual idea who they are, but you have a certain time period to kill them all. This leads to poor Yuki being attacked by all sorts of people, trying to survive. Oh, and the one that wins the game becomes the next god so they have a wish granted or something, it’s important at the very very end.
So while that’s happening, obviously we’re introduced to a big cast of characters, all who are suppose to hold some importance and make us care. We actually get a backstory on literally every single one of the participants, and guess what, they’re all dark as fuck! Who would’ve suspected that in an edgy ass anime. I will give it props for at least trying to make each character unique and rememberable, considering they disappear like 3 episodes later. Unfortunately, this just leads to a clutter of shit I don’t care about, really, then again, I only cared about 1 thing the entire show. So, in essence, the characters do get fleshed out, but they’re all fucking stereotypes, like dear christ. Every archetype you can put in the show, there’s one of them. Motherly, fatherly, gangster, teacher, etc, you name it, we got it. I would be perfectly fine with that, if it was done well. For some characters, the archetype they stuck on em was just….dumb as fuck. Main example is Minene. I fucking detest her in this show. They start her off with this badass pyscho murderer personality, which is great, it matches the show. Then BOOM, bitch turns into a god damn tsundere used as comic relief. The ending that happens with her is so freaking ridiculous, I legit cannot handle. I’m so glad that was the last episode or I straight would’ve dropped the show. So fucking dumb. Continuing on, Akise’s character was bullshit too. He literally fits the Dues Ex name, to a fucking t. Oh so you’re perfect at figuring everything at, great for your unnecessary ass. Yea I know why it’s like that, and that’s why I say Dues Ex. Like his addition, granted I appreciated it for the unnecessary boys love and Yuno anger, was just, a plot device for some dues ex shit just like most the other characters in this show. Literally all of Yuki’s friends served a single purpose, make Yuno crazy, thank guys <3 Like I’m saying, the characters are handled horribly in this show. They hold their one purpose, and once it’s fulfilled it’s like BYE FELICIA, they’re so unnecessary now, YET THEY STILL TRY TO SHOW UP ON SCREEN. Like why are you here? Go away, we’re done with you. They add NOTHING. More characters =/= better plot, lessen learned. I honestly remember like 3 of the participants because they were the only stand out ones. Best was 12th hands down, he’s fucking great and I love his episodes (it’s the gif).
Oh speaking of stand out, I will praise this show on its animation! the fights were always delicious. Like idc how edgy the show is trying to be, you show me a sexy fight with people actually dying, and I will give you your props (because fuck that coming back to life shit…shhh don’t mention it, I already know). The art was also pretty good from what I remember. Yea, the airing episodes had those retard faces every so often, but eh, too busy watching Yuno murder a fuck ton of things. Watching her moving and listening to the crazy shit she said in that cute voice, wasn’t right homes, it’s actually too good.
The reason I adore Yuno so much is simple, she’s yan as fuck. Like she’s actually the poster girl for yanderes and for this show. Without a doubt , a good chunk of Mirai Nikki’s popularity comes from Yuno, and I understand why. The ho is actually batshit insane! Like the best level I have ever seen! Breaking into his house, kidnapping, forcing him to sleep with her, like she can do no wrong man! She’s also an amazing fighter (explained in the end) so she can actually protect herself and the whack ass Yuki. Seriously, Yuki without Yuno is dead and dead. I have no clue why it even took him so long to realize how amazing she is. Like fuck her day 1, plz and thanks <3. Yuki on the other hand….oh my god, please get out of the show. He literally just cries for most of it and completely relies on Yuno and other people. He does go bamf for a while there and I did appreciate that. I appreciated it even more when he finally accepted Yuno.
I actually liked the music fro this show. It kept up a good atmosphere and I felt like it matched what it needed to match. I really loved the first opening song. I would get super hyped when I heard it. However, it’s nothing that would be remembered if you hadn’t heard it in a while. It doesn’t stand out and it doesn’t leave too much of an impression.
The ending to this show is “bittersweet” so you actually have to watch it’s sequel OVA that I skipped. I haven’t read the manga so I don’t know how much the two differ, but I know the ending is basically the same, and I know the manga ending so I’m going to say…overall, the ending is trash. The ending in the anime is trash too. Actually the show turns to trash after a certain point. They start pulling so much dues ex bullshit it get’s disgusting. Like Okay, first of all, that world hammer shit, no, go away, I love you Yuno, but stop. I liked your emo past more. And then the bullshit flying babies. Wtf kind of happy ending is that. It’s so fucking stupid. This whole show has built itself on being edgy and basically destroying everything, that when it got to the point where it wanted a happy ending, it realized the only way to do it was basically a dumb as fuck reset., Yeah they had the Good of Space and Time shit basically telling us this was going to happen all series, but still, the way they went about it was fucking dumb.
That’s another issue in this show, the writing is ass! The writers trying to seem deep and intellectual with some of the characters just comes off as pretentious and dumb as fuck. Like I sat there cringing listening to some of the players speeches. Like oh I need the power because blah blah blah, like shut up, you sound dumb and I hope you die within the next two minuets.
All in all, the show is pretty basic, if not worse. I can’t even be mad at it thought. It was a turn your brain off, action packed, yan fest, so I actually adored it. Even though I have so little good to say about it, I think it’s a fun watch if you take it at surface value. Don’t think you’re going to get invested, just have fun with it, plus it has Yuno, so I really shouldn’t meed to say anymore. Also, when the Gods name is Dues Ex, you already now where the show is going.
4 of those are for Yuno alone, 0.5 for the actual show.
