Deep Love: Ayu no Monogatari

Based on Yoshi’s hit novel series, “Deep Love” depicts the struggling life of Ayu, a 17-year-old high school girl who believes neither in a future nor the happiness it could bring her. By selling her body as a teenage prostitute, she’s trying to justify her existence, which is as bleak as her heart: it’s void of joy, sorrow, love. It’s not until her encounter with a kind-hearted old lady that Ayu begins to realize the true meaning of happiness…

Avelys Rating: 7/10

Avelys Notes: Very mature series. The first short manga I’ve read. I highly recommend if you like dark, mature and can handle sex scenes. I also suggest you read the accompanying sequels, Host, Reina and Pao. Read Pao last. It made me cry like a baby (if you have a soft spot for animals this will hit you home). Ayu’s story is very raw and there are no punches pulled back. She is someone you’ll grow to understand and root for. Her motivation is understandable and the characters surrounding her have interesting stories (especially the Dog’s story, Pao!). They are intertwined to give different perspectives of what is happening and shines light on what’s happening in the background to Ayu’s story. You will be shown pretty shocking scenes. I mean, reading it now, I have read my share of dark manga but as my first, this really opened my eyes to how limitless manga can be–telling a moving story through good writing and drawings. Some people might not like the angst and drama–which I can understand. Some of the horrible stuff that happens seems to be a little too dramatic. I still think it’s a worthwhile read, regardless. Especially if you want to try something different from the usual cute highschool girls 😉
